Seems like everyone who's anyone is Tweeting on Twitter these days including: celebrities, politicians and people from all walks of life. In fact, President Obama's rival John McCain posted this Tweet directly to the president this morning, "No time is better than the present to undertake earmark reform Mr. President".
So what's Twitter?
Twitter is an online microblogging community that allows anyone to post short messages to the rest of the world. Messages are limited to 140 characters so they're easy reads whether you're on a laptop or a cell phone. Best of all, you only have to see the Tweets you're interested in. You choose to follow whoever you want, but they're not obligated to follow you back.
Twitter accounts are free and you can update the world on just about anything, but if you spam people or upset the community, Twitter will shut you down. Followers can un-follow you anytime and block your Tweets altogether. Tweeters give constant updates on everything from what they're eating for breakfast to the inner workings of the US Senate.
It seems like you can't watch television or visit a website without seeing something about Twitter nowadays. Cable news networks like MSNBC Tweet back and forth with live viewers throughout the day. They take questions giving followers a chance to control content as it happens. Shows like Morning Joe and Countdown both have Twitter pages with thousands of followers.
And it's not just celebrities and politicians using Twitter in highly productive ways. Many large corporations have Twitter pages including Ford and Zappos, and thousands of small businesses and websites have plugged into the network with great success. Most importantly, all kinds of people from soccer moms to plumbers are using Twitter to stay connected to the people they care about.
Right now Twitter is still in its' infancy. While lots of related web start-ups have been popping up around it, Twitter itself has not quite figured a way to make money - Yet. With offices in San Francisco, Twitter currently has about 30 employees and they serve over 8 Million users and growing. Twitter accounts are growing by 30% monthly, and the network is virally spreading across the internet on websites, blogs, Facebook and Myspace pages. Twitter is on its way to being everywhere.
